Fuelling Around podcast: Coronation Street star Simon Gregson on his dislike of electric cars

Coronation Street legend Simon Gregson is the latest guest on series 10 of the award-winning podcast Fuelling Around.

Gregson is best known for playing Steve McDonald on the cobbles for over 35 years and has been involved in some of the biggest storylines in the soap’s history.

He sat down with hosts Jason Plato and Dave Vitty to discuss his big break on Coronation Street, how he started loving cars after helping his dad and his issue with electric vehicles.

Simon Gregson on where his passion for cars came from

During his chat with the boys, Gregson detailed why he doesn’t like electric vehicles and how his love for cars started.

“My dad’s always been into cars. Growing up and not having a lot of money he was always having to fix his own cars,” Gregson began.

“So of course I was always in my dad’s shadow trying to help him do this, that and the other. Basically getting in the way all the time.

“We didn’t particularly have anything special, but I’ve just loved cars ever since I could push them around on the little Matchbox pack. I just had a huge passion for them. I remember my mate had a great collection of Matchbox cars, and I would sit there looking at them, dreaming one day I’d be able to own a real one of those.

“My first motor was a Suzuki Samurai, the SJ413. We were driving somewhere me and my dad and I saw it on a car lot.”

When the topic moved onto electric vehicles, Gregson was stern in his response about whether they’re better or worse than petrol and diesel.

“I think it’s fair to say, if you love cars then you know that a petrol, or even a diesel, internal combustion engines have a soul. Your car has a soul and you become very attached to it. And for me electric cars are just completely soulless. I have driven one and I just hated it.

“It’s the noise, it’s the smell, it’s the way you can get that gearbox and engine in perfect harmony. The fuel is pumping around like the blood in your body and it’s just a living, breathing thing.”
